Robert Redford, the Oscar-winning actor and director known for his roles in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” and “All the President’s Men,” has died at 89, according to his publicist Cindi Berger. Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home in Sundance, Utah, surrounded by loved ones. The family requests privacy.
Beyond acting, Redford directed films like “Ordinary People” and “A River Runs Through It.” He founded the Sundance Institute, supporting independent film and theater, and was a dedicated environmentalist. He acted into his later years, including in “Our Souls at Night” and “The Old Man & the Gun.”
Born in Santa Monica in 1936, Redford moved to Utah in 1961, where he built a cabin and embraced nature. He starred in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” with Paul Newman and directed “Ordinary People,” winning an Oscar for Best Director.
Redford founded the Sundance Institute in 1981, merging his passion for film and the environment. The Sundance Film Festival became a major platform for independent filmmakers. Redford received an honorary Oscar in 2002 and remained active in storytelling and environmental advocacy throughout his life.
He is survived by his wife, daughters Shauna Redford Schlosser and Amy Redford, and seven grandchildren.
