Heller Tag (Bright Day)
Heller Tag (Bright Day) is an independent German film directed by André Nitzschke.
George is battling a terminal illness. He is gripped by the fear of his approaching death and confronts this fear in solitude. During the short period he has remaining, he experiences numerous transformations. He not only perceives the world around him in a new light, but his thoughts, dreams, and memories also impact him more profoundly than before. In his last days, both hope and tragedy come to the forefront.

Andrey Nitzschke was born in Erlabrunn-Steinheidel (GDR). He completed high school in 1982, and from 1982 to 1988, he worked as a directing intern and wardrobe supervisor at the Berliner Ensemble, as well as a museum supervisor, eventually becoming a freelance author and assistant director. In 1988, he began studying film and television directing at the HFF "Konrad Wolf" in Potsdam-Babelsberg. He wrote his diploma thesis on “Religion and Film,” which he defended in 1994, receiving a “Very Good” grade. With his main examination film "What Remains" (1992) about a dying child, Nitzschke highlighted a media taboo at the time.

The film sparked debate at the Leipzig International Documentary Film Festival. The short film "Farewell" (1993) led to a German nomination for the Student Oscar and premiered at international film festivals in Israel, Munich, and Oberhausen. With the HFF diploma film "Heller Tag" (1994) featuring Bruno Ganz, which was shown as a German competition entry at international film festivals in Tokyo and Chicago, Nitzschke gained international recognition as a film director. Following his studies, he was a master student of director Frank Beyer at the Academy of Arts in Berlin. From 1994 to 2010, he developed various international projects with film producers worldwide and received international funding for his artistic work, such as from the European Script Fund London and ACE - Ateliers du Cinema Européen Paris.

Between 1999 and 2003, Nitzschke produced and created international TV documentaries in Sri Lanka. From 2004 to 2008, he worked as a lecturer and specialist consultant in film and television directing, TV production, and media communication at various universities in Germany, and as a creative producer for university productions. He worked in television and also created non-profit advertising film projects. Alongside his work as an author and director, he continues to serve as a freelancer in international humanitarian crisis intervention. Nitzschke supported and managed a humanitarian crisis project for orphans in Sri Lanka from 1999 to 2021. Since 2022, he has been working on two new feature film projects: "Broken Desert," a thriller, and the second part of the arthouse trilogy "Bright Day".
Since 2026, he has been working on the following new projects: the thriller Broken Desert, co-written with author Jörg Weismann; the actor Alan Rickman was very interested in playing the lead role. He has been working the psychological thriller Two Up—a project he is revisiting after a 28-year period during which he had lost the rights to the screenplay (originally co-written with Gabi Blauert). He and Alan Rickman had met several times in London and Berlin, as Alan Rickman was keenly interested in the lead role. Nitzschke’s agency and all parties involved opted for a German producer rather than accepting offers from the US; this proved to be a grave mistake. After the directing contract was finalized, the producer insisted on handing the directing duties to a well-known US filmmaker. Nitzschke refused and lost the rights. In 2025, he and his German agency succeeded in reclaiming the rights, and Nitzschke is now planning to relaunch the project. He is also working on a sequel to the arthouse film Heller Tag, titled When My World Ends, as well as an international TV documentary about Gerhard F. Klügl—a leading figure in subtle-energy surgery who collaborates with numerous doctors across Europe. Nitzschke’s debut film, Heller Tag—starring the late Bruno Ganz—received numerous international awards in 2025/2026, effectively decades after its initial release.
