The 97th annual Academy Awards nominations were announced Thursday, led by "Emilia Pérez," "A Complete Unknown," and "Conclave." The announcement was delayed twice due to Los Angeles wildfires.

"Emilia Pérez," a crime musical about a transitioned cartel leader, received 13 nominations, just shy of the record 14 held by "Titanic," "All About Eve," and "La La Land."

Karla Sofía Gascón, in the title role, is the first transgender woman nominated in an acting category, competing with Cynthia Erivo from "Wicked" and Demi Moore from "The Substance." Both Moore and the film were anticipated for top Oscar nominations.

"The Brutalist" and "Wicked" follow with 10 nominations each. These films, along with "The Substance," "A Complete Unknown," "Conclave," "Anora," "Dune: Part Two," "Nickel Boys," and "I'm Still Here," are nominated for best picture.

"Emilia Pérez" won four Golden Globes, including best motion picture musical or comedy, and best supporting actress for Zoe Saldaña. "The Brutalist," about a Holocaust survivor, won best motion picture drama, with Adrian Brody also winning. Both Saldaña and Brody received Oscar nominations.

When is the Oscar awards ceremony?

The nominations were originally scheduled for Jan. 17 but, as with a number of other industry awards ceremonies that traditionally make up Hollywood's social calendar in January, the proliferation of wildfires in the Los Angeles area had organizers scrambling to reschedule. The Oscars nominees luncheon has been canceled, the academy says. It had been scheduled for Feb. 10.

As of now, the Oscars are still scheduled to be handed out on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
